[16:06] <Vanfanel> Hi. I'm building recent sources on 32bit ARM GNU/Linux (Raspberry Pi) and voices are heavily distorted in most games. OPL/CMS synthsound is ok. Is this a known issue?
[16:07] <Vanfanel> I'm building against SDL 1.2.x
[16:08] <Henke37> what kind of distortion?
[16:08] <Henke37> are they playing with the wrong pitch?
[16:08] <Henke37> are they so loud that they are clipping?
[16:09] <Henke37> and name a game where this is occuring
[16:09] <Vanfanel> Henke37: wrong pitch, loud volume, almost unintelligible. DOTT is an example.
[16:09] <Vanfanel> Henke37: also, Elvira's wolf screeam in the intro
[16:09] <Henke37> and scummvm regogniced the games correctly?
[16:10] <Vanfanel> And sound and voices in Dreamweb too
[16:10] <Henke37> so not an engine isolated bug then
[16:10] <Vanfanel> yes, it did recognice the games with no problem
[16:10] <Vanfanel> No, no engine isolated, that's for sure
[16:10] <Henke37> this smells like a backend problem
[16:11] <Henke37> what sound api are you using? openal, oss, alsa, esd, jack and so on
[16:11] <Vanfanel> Henke37: alsa. SDL runs on ALSA here.
[16:12] <_sev> Vanfanel: never heard of this issue before
[16:12] <Henke37> have you tried another output api?
[16:12] <_sev> but we use SDL
[16:12] <_sev> could be your driver, or SDL, or OS...
[16:12] <_sev> ScummVM code was not touched there
[16:13] <Vanfanel> _sev: you use SDL and in turn SDL uses ALSA, as far as I know, right?
[16:13] <_sev> except... do you have specific sound driver for the Pi?
[16:13] <_sev> Vanfanel: no, I'm on Mac
[16:13] <Vanfanel> _sev: no, no, I would have mentioned it if I had an specific Pi driver
[16:13] <Henke37> _sev, I think the "you" was refering to the project at large
[16:14] <_sev> well, in this case
[16:14] <_sev> we do use SDL on some platofrms
[16:14] <Henke37> like windows
[16:16] <_sev> yes, Windows uses SDl
[16:16] <_sev> here are all of our digital audio backends: https://github.com/scummvm/scummvm/tree/master/backends/mixer
[16:16] <_sev> MIDI has its own backends: https://github.com/scummvm/scummvm/tree/master/backends/midi
[16:18] <Vanfanel> I understan GNU/Linux uses SDL for digital audio, right?
[16:19] <_sev> yes
[16:20] <Vanfanel> I will try to build against SDL2 then, and see what happens
[16:21] <wjp> does audio work with other programs using SDL for you?
[16:22] <Vanfanel> wjp: yes, it does. I ported RetroGuru games to the Raspberry Pi and these use SDL audio, too.
[16:22] <Henke37> my best guess here is that there is a sample format mismatch
[16:22] <Henke37> like integer vs float
[16:23] <Henke37> that would give results like the ones you are experiencing
[16:24] <wjp> or just a volume set far too high somewhere
[16:24] <Vanfanel> wjp: not, pitch is also wrong
[16:24] <Henke37> that wouldn't affect the pitch
[16:24] <wjp> yes, but things like that are notoriously hard to judge
[16:24] <Vanfanel> it's not just a volume-related distortion, I'm sure of that
[16:25] <Vanfanel> wjp: Bernard in DOTT speaks veeeery sloooowly
[16:25] <Vanfanel> It's easy to notice that :)
[16:25] <Vanfanel> I have seen the DOTT intro so many times I can repeat it myself word by word! :D
[16:26] <wjp> and this is something that used to work?
[16:26] <Vanfanel> wjp: yes, it used to work.
[16:27] <wjp> so when did it break?

[16:28] <Vanfanel> wjp: at some point after I merged with master. I am also recalling I also updated RPI's firmware. Maybe it's not related to the scummvm code after all...
[16:28] <wjp> after the merge? But nothing really changed after that merge yet?
[16:29] <Vanfanel> wjp: since my raspberry pi backend is a graphics backend only and scummvm uses stock sdl audio, I hadn't tested audio afted the merge. It was working great before.
[16:30] <Vanfanel> wjp: don't worry too much. Let me run some tests, like building against SDL2, etc...
[16:30] <Vanfanel> I just wanted to know if it's a know issue with git code
[16:30] <wjp> do you use ARM ASM?
[16:31] <Vanfanel> wjp: it's somehow configured and compiled, yes: I have seen it being built.
[16:31] <wjp> try disabling that
[16:31] <Vanfanel> but that's not something I have enabled explicitly
[16:32] <Vanfanel> wjp: building against SDL2 causes the same problem
[16:32] <Vanfanel> that leaves the SDL1 audio backend out, right?
[16:33] <Vanfanel> also, how can I disable the ARM ASM?
[16:33] <Vanfanel> --disable-nasm, maybe?
[16:34] <wjp> hm, no, just try killing the line with USE_ARM_SOUND_ASM in configure
[16:34] <Vanfanel> ok
[16:34] <wjp> I always forget if there's a nice way
[16:36] <Vanfanel> crossbuilding now...
[16:42] --> Harekiet joined #scummvm.
[16:44] <Vanfanel> wjp: well, it's working perfectly now. It's ARM ASM sound.
[16:44] <Vanfanel> Crystal-clear sound without it
[16:46] <Vanfanel> I will build more engines now to be sure.
[16:46] <wjp> right
[16:47] <wjp> I'm tempted to just disable all ARM ASM routines everywhere
[16:47] <wjp> any opinions?
[16:48] <Vanfanel> wjp: Can I give you an opinion after I measure CPU usage on the Pi with and without them?
[16:50] <wjp> that sounds very useful
[16:50] <Vanfanel> ok, then I will do some different builds and tests
[16:57] <Vanfanel> wjp: also, was ARM ASM SOUND recently introduced? Audio was working great before I did the merge.
[16:58] <wjp> things were changed
[16:58] <wjp> the resampling now supports a wider range of input(?) formats, and asm was in theory changed accordingly
[17:00] <Vanfanel> wjp: so it wasn't or something went wrong... maybe it should be a good idea to tell the person in charge of the ARM ASM sound code?
[17:01] <wjp> definitely
[17:02] <wjp> can you submit a bug report?
[17:02] <Vanfanel> yes, of course. Who's in charge of that?
[17:02] <wjp> it has been relatively unmaintained
[17:03] <wjp> but there's no need to assign it to anyone
[17:03] <Vanfanel> wjp: I am also running more engines without the ARM ASM sound code, and all of them sound perfectly
[17:04] <Vanfanel> so that was definitively the problem
[17:06] <wjp> ok, great
[17:08] <Vanfanel> It may sound stupid but I don't see the "issues" button on the scummvm github repo

[20:05] <waltervn> hi greg :)
[20:05] <gtaylormb> hey walter
[20:06] <gtaylormb> I think it's been like 10 years since I'm been on IRC :)
[20:06] <gtaylormb> good to be back
[20:06] <gtaylormb> so anyway
[20:07] <gtaylormb> I need to read more about this USB-MIDI thing
[20:07] <gtaylormb> is this how to talk to real OPL3 hardware now?
[20:08] <gtaylormb> sorry is this how you support real OPL3 hardware in ScummVM now?
[20:08] <waltervn> that was just a suggestion that would allow us to get this working with little impact on the scummvm codebase, I think
[20:09] <waltervn> I'm not sure if our config system would let us pick OPL *and* a MIDI device however
[20:09] <gtaylormb> I'm worried going from OPL3->midi->OPL3 will have a negative effect on the sound
[20:09] <gtaylormb> yeah understandable to have minimum impact on the codebase
[20:09] <waltervn> you can transfer any data through MIDI, basically. Sierra games used to send text to the LCD on the MT-32, for example
[20:10] <waltervn> "INSERT BUCKAZOID" etc
[20:10] <gtaylormb> ahh interesting... yeah heh shows how much I know about midi
[20:10] <waltervn> there might be better options though
[20:11] <gtaylormb> yeah like I mentioned on my end by far the easiest thing to do is simply take in register writes via UART
[20:11] <gtaylormb> I could get that working in probably less than an hour
[20:12] <gtaylormb> this wouldn't include timer support though
[20:12] <gtaylormb> the UART writes would have to be timed correctly
[20:13] <waltervn> that shouldn't be a problem, as ScummVM already supports real-time MIDI output
[20:13] <waltervn> I'll be afk for a bit, need to get the kids to go to sleep
[20:13] <gtaylormb> ok no prob

[21:25] <waltervn> gtaylormb: hacking something together with UART writes should be fairly easy, I think. See audio/alsa_opl.cpp for an example of hardware OPL output (ignore all the crazy ALSA code in there).

[21:48] <t0by> waltervn, gtaylormb sorry for being clueless, but what is the problem with OPL3?
[21:48] <t0by> ("MIDI" always gets my attention)
[21:50] <t0by> waltervn, I you can transfer any data through MIDI via sysex *but* the bandwidth you get is ridiculous
[21:50] <t0by> If I have understood what you are talking about
[21:51] <t0by> piping sampled audio through MIDI is... well, not really gonna work
[21:51] <-- lewellyn left irc: Ping timeout: 250 seconds
[21:52] <t0by> On the other hand this is very relevant

[21:52] <Henke37> midi doesn't have the bandwidth, does it?
[21:53] <t0by> Henke37, no way. you know what's fun?

[21:53] <Henke37> reading the game script and catching jokes you've missed?
[21:53] <t0by> When you have a master keyboard and create 16 large nice zones that cover the whole keyboard, one for each channel
[21:54] <t0by> then weighing down the keys with a whole arm
[21:54] <waltervn> t0by: we'd only be transmitting OPL register write commands, not digital audio
[21:54] <t0by> and hearing the synthesizer lagging because MIDI *doesn't have enough bandwidth*
[21:54] <t0by> waltervn, well then.
[21:54] <Henke37> ah yes, I do recall hearing that it has bandwidth problems when playing multiple notes at once
[21:54] <t0by> I guess you can easily define your own set of sysex messages for that
[21:55] <t0by> Henke37, in general that's not a real problem because nobody does that
[21:55] <t0by> (whole arm blah blah)
[21:55] <t0by> also you need to be using all the channels to really hear it
[21:55] <t0by> but it happens.
[21:56] <t0by> MIDI is a nice little serial protocol with an abysmal hardware layer.
[21:57] <Henke37> I duno, the closed loop + optocoupler setup should be quite resistent to abuse
[21:57] <t0by> Henke37, yes, that's very nice
[21:58] <t0by> oh also
[21:58] <t0by> if you daisy chain several MIDI modules
[21:58] <t0by> you can actually hear the one at the end of a chain lagging.
[21:59] <Henke37> heh, I hear that the thru jack is supposed to mitigate that problem
[21:59] <gtaylormb> we're talking about adding support for an FPGA-based implementation of the OPL3
