[16:32] <snover> man, what is going on with virtualbox& guest is using 3% CPU and virtualbox is using 132% CPU to run this
[16:33] <snover> i guess i should not have upgraded it to the latest version along with my host OS&
[16:44] <m_kiewitz> For what do you use it, snover?
[16:44] <snover> linux testing of scummvm
[16:45] <m_kiewitz> ah
[16:45] <snover> something is really wrong, not only is the cpu usage through the roof but its so stuck doing whatever its doing that it wont even respond to mouse clicks to open the menus in the macos host system menu bar
[16:45] <m_kiewitz> I had a really weird problem with Ubuntu on my old notebook. Fan was active all the time and the system got quite hot. Didn't happen when using Windows.

[16:48] <snover> yes, vCPUs doesnt matter, chipset doesnt matter, 3D acceleration doesnt matter, I cant disable I/O APIC because the window manager wont load without it, mouse integration doesnt matter
[16:49] <snover> nested paging doesnt matter, host i/o cache doesnt matter, disk type doesnt matter
[16:50] <snover> i guess ill reboot the host system just in case, then try going back to 5.0 if it is still broken

[18:13] <snover> wellll, when i rebooted my computer it had a kernel panic in some code with an I/O APIC dependency in the backtrace, so that doesnt fill me with a lot of confidence, but lets see what happens now.
[18:14] <logix> rebooted the vm you mean?
[18:14] <snover> no, my host system.
[18:16] <logix> oh, oops...
[18:23] <snover> its still broken.
[18:24] <wjp> uh oh
[18:24] <snover> im running 5.1.26, i will try 5.1.22 and then 5.0.whatever
[18:26] <wjp> virtualbox is crashing your host?
[18:26] <snover> i dont know the source of the crash, it crashed after rebooting starting up the OS
[18:26] <snover> then the second time it was fine
[18:27] <snover> so i assume some hardware got into a bad state, though i do not know who exactly is responsible
[18:35] <snover> 5.1.18 is broken too (i used this instead of 5.1.22 because they broke some stuff in macOS between 5.1.20 and 5.1.24)
[18:40] <-- ccawley2011 left irc: Ping timeout: 260 seconds

[18:44] <snover> 5.0 is OK. thats not good.
[18:46] <snover> though, better than the host OS being the source of the problem.
[19:32] <logix> I'd like to say "the OS shouldn't crash, no matter what" but then there are the vbox kernel modules...
[19:46] <snover> it might be worth me getting a parallels or vmware licence at some point
[19:47] <snover> since for a while i have suspected virtualbox is doing other bad things leading to the window manager having issues
[19:47] <snover> and i found someone else reporting a very similar issue, https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/15950
