[01:16] <tsoliman> I'll go look
[01:16] <snover> &i dont know why i did not just paste the link https://bugs.scummvm.org/ticket/9765
[01:16] <snover> sheesh
[01:16] <tsoliman> that /ticket/ part of the URL is a bridge too far for my brain
[01:16] <tsoliman> I keep doing /9765
[01:25] <tsoliman> wow .. I dunno if I have it
[01:26] <tsoliman> I found 4 CDs.. none of them are an exact match - but maybe it is included in one of them?
[01:27] <snover> i do not know a whole lot about hoyle stuff, though this one is sci0late
[01:27] <tsoliman> I need to sort my "unsorted" pile, I keep buying multiple copies of the same thing - I found 2 copies of JMP2
[01:29] <tsoliman> 4 copies of riven :( who wants riven?
[01:33] <tsoliman> (I should have restated that as "free riven giveaway, who wants one?")
[01:33] <snover> please, take three
[01:46] <tsoliman> punch me in the face next time I stick an old CD into the old MBP slot drive
[01:46] <tsoliman> it wouldn't eject without a reboot into the boot menu
[01:47] <snover> the gut-churning noises that those drives make on every startup isnt enough to get you to never stick anything in them? :)
[01:47] <tsoliman> it's been a while and I forgot why I never do that :(
[01:47] <tsoliman> it wouldn't even let it shut down .. it was like "I'll read this CD if it's the last thing I do"
[01:47] <tsoliman> I had to "hard off" it
[01:48] <tsoliman> the new MBPs don't even have a drive
[01:48] <tsoliman> I was too lazy to go downstairs to the gaming rig (the linux laptops are probably never getting repaired)
[01:57] <snover> im starting to imagine stacks and stacks of computer stuff :)
[02:28] Action: tsoliman facepalms
[02:28] <tsoliman> I found a "big box" riven
[02:28] <tsoliman> if I organize this, then the next time I go to goodwill I can just check the picture/text/whatever index
[02:29] <tsoliman> also the macbook chewed up the CD pretty bad - I had to dump it at 4x to get it to dump
[02:29] <-- dreammaster left irc:
[02:30] <Lightkey> don't remind me.. I bought Riven and Myst III again at the VCFe.. because I probably don't have those editions, maybe..
[02:30] <tsoliman> I wish we had something like that here
[02:32] <tsoliman> Goodwill is like "here's a KQ7 CD for 1 USD" .. who am I to say "I already have the KQ Collection on disk and also the GOG and Steam versions"
[02:34] <Lightkey> oh wait, it was the original Myst, not Riven
[02:34] <tsoliman> I never played Riven :(
[02:35] <tsoliman> when I was a kid I was in the "myst is not a real game" camp .. I now came to appreciate it
[02:39] <Lightkey> I still am :-)
[03:15] <Deledrius> Riven is amazing :D
[03:23] <snover> yay, someone completed phantasmagoria without hitting a single bug
[03:41] <snover> yay, i discovered that this sq5 special-casing stuff in processPatch is not necessary, nobody just apparently bothered to fully reverse sci1.1 to figure out the magic (but the magic was all in sci32 too)
[04:11] <snover> (i guess saying not necessary isnt quite right. it is necessary, it was just being done in a manner that was somewhat obfuscated.)
[05:02] <tsoliman> no luck with Hoyle .. 3 of the CDs didn't come up (1 had an unknown sig) and 1 of them was hoyle5
[05:02] <tsoliman> hoyle5-win to be specific .. not what we're looking for
[05:03] <snover> i dont think i have seen anyone with a full version of hoyle5 yet
[05:03] <tsoliman> do you want it?
[05:04] <tsoliman> I'll probably be testing it, my (7.9 yr old) son saw me dumping it and was like "hey can we play these?"

[15:58] --> omer_mor joined #scummvm.
[15:59] <wjp> how does it work wrt the resource maps?
[16:02] --> ny00123 joined #scummvm.
[16:05] <snover> when attempting to load a resource into memory in AudioVolumeResourceSource::loadResource, it looks up the file offset from the Resource object (which is added by readAudioMapSCI1/readAudioMapSCI11, regardless of whether the corresponding audio volume is compressed) and then uses a separate translation table to change the size field of the Resource and seeks the file stream to the compressed offset location
[16:07] <snover> hopefully that made sense
[16:12] <snover> so, the audio map reading would need to be changed to find the translation table in advance, and the translation table also probably needs to be fixed up because the offsets to audio resources arent the same any more (everything works like SSCI now, pointing at the audio file header instead of the first byte of data after the header)

[16:42] <logix> snover: I assume there are at least a few platforms scummvm runs on that don't support sdhc
[16:43] <-- Cheeseness left irc: Ping timeout: 260 seconds
[16:52] <snover> logix: well, that was just a general statement about how having a 3.3MB instead of a 3.4MB audio file, or a 472MB instead of a 599MB audio file (for a talkie), doesnt seem like its going to make or break things for people these days
[17:09] <logix> snover: oh, that doesn't make much of a difference, true
[17:09] <logix> I thought this was about something like mp3 instead of raw pcm (or wav) or so
[17:15] <snover> it is.
[17:15] <snover> most audio in sci1.1 and later are 2:1 DPCM compressed
[17:15] <snover> sometimes there are uncompressed wave files
[17:16] <m_kiewitz> snover: 599.841.365 for mine
[17:16] <m_kiewitz> so the same as TMM
[17:16] <snover> one could use a more aggressive compression setting to make the files smaller than the default
[17:17] <m_kiewitz> snover: we already support that
[17:17] <snover> i know.
[17:19] <m_kiewitz> what's the problem btw?

[17:21] <snover> replacing resource.aud/sfx with a compressed resource.aud/sfx invalidates the offsets in the games original audio maps, and the file offsets were adjusted so the translation table in compressed resource.aud/sfx arent right

[17:23] <snover> its fixable
[17:24] <m_kiewitz> but why did the audio work?
[17:24] <snover> good question
[17:25] <snover> im running the tool so i can look at things in more detail
[17:25] <m_kiewitz> oh wait, so it was just a problem with the kq6 sync data?
[17:25] Nick change: omer_mor_ -> omer_mor
[17:25] <m_kiewitz> it seems back then when compressed resource.aud support was added
[17:25] <m_kiewitz> we didn't even HAVE an idea about that sync data
[17:26] <m_kiewitz> the appended sync data is special data, which is exclusive to kq6
[17:26] <omer_mor> snover: you still need hoyle 1? I've got that.
[17:26] <m_kiewitz> and it's used by the portrait DLL only
[17:27] <snover> i suppose i could be wrong about the file offsets, and its really just the audio map validation that needs to be fixed
[17:27] <snover> im trying to run the tool
[17:27] <m_kiewitz> maybe the compression does in fact ruin the additional sync data
[17:28] <m_kiewitz> i have never tried compressed resource.aud kq6 + hires portraits
[17:28] <m_kiewitz> that sync data is basically added inbetween audio, it's basically hacked into the game
[17:28] <m_kiewitz> regular (actual) sync data is afaik inside resource.00x
[17:29] <snover> neat.
[17:29] <m_kiewitz> (sync data for the scripts)
[17:29] <m_kiewitz> at least i think so
[17:29] <snover> omer_mor: i do, but i am a little distracted at the moment. for https://bugs.scummvm.org/ticket/9765
[17:29] <m_kiewitz> and the kq6 "sync" data isn't even really sync data, it's a completely different data format
[17:29] <m_kiewitz> we just called it like that
[17:30] <m_kiewitz> well in case we are in fact talking about the same data
[17:30] <m_kiewitz> hires portaits is doing by a DLL, which was also hacked into the windows interpreter (kq6 only)
[17:30] <m_kiewitz> *are done
[17:34] <m_kiewitz> i guess i should check where regular sync data is
[17:34] <m_kiewitz> just to make sure
[17:34] <m_kiewitz> still i'm absolutely sure that audio compression worked properly including lip sync data (except for the special kq6 situation)
[17:35] <m_kiewitz> so maybe kq6 resource.aud compression + hires portraits do not go well with each other
[17:35] --> girafe joined #scummvm.
[17:35] <m_kiewitz> but if that's the case, then this was already the case before. lip sync wouldn't have worked at all
[17:36] <-- Farmboy0 left irc: Read error: No route to host
[17:39] <snover> well the good news is that i seem to have been mistaken about the file offsets being bad, the translation table just needs to be applied earlier in readAudioMapSCI1/11
[17:39] <snover> but KQ6 hires definitely crashes
[17:39] <snover> i need to go for a few hours. i will be back later!
[17:43] <m_kiewitz> in case of hires portraits it should have crashed earlier and/or lip sync for hires shouldn't have worked
