[00:00] <m_kiewitz> ah that one urgh
[00:01] <m_kiewitz> i think in that case probably figuring out all patches and putting them inside ScummVM is the cleanest approach
[00:01] <m_kiewitz> no idea how much they fixed
[00:07] <snover> there seem to be a lot of changes. i did a very rough diff against decompiled scripts and it showed around 1000 line changes. the actual changes are somewhat less than that since it looks like they may have even changed some script numbers
[00:08] <snover> code related to some Herman object seems to be involved in a lot of the changes
[00:11] <snover> one thing in particular that baffles me about this French PointSoft release is that they seem to have included the patched script for 20700 but not the patched heap, so it was still broken https://bugs.scummvm.org/ticket/9797

[02:14] <tsoliman> snover, m_kiewitz : yeah it is write protected with that tab on it ... 3.5" floppies are the opposite: hole = write protected
[02:15] <tsoliman> a lot of the games I buy 3.5 aren't write protected and macOS has this stupid .fs_whatever that it puts on them
[02:15] <tsoliman> as soon as you insert the disk, it writes that hidden file onto it .. I had to download a 3rd party tool to remove it because my linux laptop is still broken
[02:16] <tsoliman> .fseventsd
[02:19] <snover> macos is really special.
[02:21] <snover> just like pq4.
[02:22] <tsoliman> "CleanMyDrive 2"
[02:22] <tsoliman> (from the app store)
[02:22] <tsoliman> just deleting the folder doesn't work - it keeps creating it on flush
[02:23] <tsoliman> it was infuriating because some of the floppies were from '89 - you don't wanna write to them
[02:24] <tsoliman> to avoid this nonsense in the future, I raw dumped all my floppies using dd after applying "cleanmydrive 2" to them
[02:24] <snover> yeah, i cant really comprehend why macos thinks writing garbage to whatever disk-like thing comes its way is ok
[02:24] <tsoliman> what's wrong with pq4?
[02:24] <snover> it does the same nonsense to network shares too
[02:25] <snover> well, i implemented this hshutterout transition mode, because a ticket was opened about it, but then it turns out that its actually a script bug; the script is sending the wrong number of arguments to a function.
[02:25] <tsoliman> so there was this app to get it to quit writing .DS_Store nonsense (by redirecting to your home dir) but SIP broke it
[02:26] <snover> so nothing is actually using this transition mode.
[02:26] <tsoliman> and as far as network shares in general, I stopped mounting remote shares on my mac ..
[02:26] <tsoliman> so you're script patching the script?
[02:27] <tsoliman> if so, we can "enhance" the games with swaky new transitions :)
[02:28] <snover> i guess ill commit it because i did the work already and i hate this game and i dont feel like patching the stupid call
[02:29] <tsoliman> this game was such a disappointment to my sister and myself
[02:30] <tsoliman> the red herrings .. the no-more-sonny-bonds .. the "realism"
[02:31] <tsoliman> it wasn't as bad as KQ8 - that takes the cake as far as disappointment
[02:32] <tsoliman> I dunno what happened with KQ8 and Ultima 9 .. great 2D series turn 3D and become garbage, but not before having a mediocre 2D entry to ease the transition
[02:39] <tsoliman> is there a point in having SCI32 be disable-able?

[02:49] <snover> tsoliman: moving to 3D was an attempt at a technical solution to a game design problem :)
[02:50] <snover> i wonder the same thing about disabling sci32. but for the moment i still ifdef the code.
[02:51] <tsoliman> maybe after the 1.10.0 release (assuming it comes with SCI32 support) we can have a discussion about it .. it seems like a lot of time is spent fixing SCI-without-32 builds and such
[02:54] <snover> only when i break it, which doesnt happen too often any more. (famous last words.)
[02:55] <tsoliman> but like .. MI4 for example was still an adventure game like MI3 .. just in a clunky 3D interface .. .. I dunno what KQ8 was trying to be
[02:57] <tsoliman> it's like Grim Fandango is on one side of the scale for me and KQ8 is on the other .. both 3D

[03:05] <tsoliman> "it's not necessarily king's quest" :)
[03:06] <snover> i am reminded of zombocom
[03:06] <tsoliman> if they had called it "Mask of Eternity" then I would just dismiss it and not be dissapointed
[03:06] <tsoliman> Ultima 8 had this same effect but I can blame EA for that and dismiss that too
[03:08] <tsoliman> "it's not about the story"
[03:08] <tsoliman> a lot of these pull-quotes I am doing are horrible
[03:09] <tsoliman> "I came into that house ... or that windmill ... and I wanted to go look at the window, it's really BAD"
[03:11] <tsoliman> this is like those George Lucas videos after The Phantom Menace screenings ... the private stuff is like "this is really bad" and the public stuff is like "this is a breakthrough"
[03:20] <snover> speaking of breakthroughs, non-sarcastically, the quality of the automatic transcription on this video is kind of blowing my mind
[03:20] <tsoliman> KQ8 outsold Grim Fandango 2 to 1 ... that answers why they called it "King's Quest" :D
[03:21] <tsoliman> "I wanted to cook in the window"
[03:21] <snover> this is the first time i have turned CC on and have it actually mostly make sense
[03:21] <snover> lol
[03:21] <snover> well, its close.
[03:21] <tsoliman> it is very very good .. like I want to correct it but it's what she actually says
[03:22] <tsoliman> and it doesn't answer what she got a real urge to do ..
[03:22] <tsoliman> I haven't turned on CC (autogenerated) for years now
[03:22] <tsoliman> usually it is funny
[03:22] <tsoliman> but yeah - it is very very good now
[03:23] <tsoliman> yeah all the mistakes so far are her mumbling

[18:36] <pecosdave> Okay, well I just got my toddler a copy of Berenstain Bears Get in a Fight from an old disk. I found out it doesn't like to work well with the original engine on XP so I tried ScummVM since it works well on my Humongous Entertainment Games
[18:36] <pecosdave> Well, it plays the demo great
[18:37] <Strangerke> I now expect a "but" :)
[18:37] <pecosdave> But even when I edit the .ini file to bearfight and put bearfight in the command line, and select the main title in the GUI it always comes up with the demo
[18:37] <pecosdave> the demo is labeled lbdemo or something like that
[18:38] <Strangerke> well, if it's an interactive demo... there's not much you can do
[18:38] <pecosdave> So this particular game is going to be demo only?
[18:39] <Strangerke> is it labeled 'demo' in scummvm?
[18:40] <pecosdave> Scumm VM give me the option of Living Books Sampler AND The Berenstain Bears Get in a Fight, but both load the sampler
[18:41] --> frankyboy_ joined #scummvm.
[18:41] <Strangerke> sadly it's one of the few titles I don't own so I'm not really helpful in this case :/
[18:42] <pecosdave> Bummer, thanks for the help on this one. Sadly, I've been an I.T. guy for 20 years and can usually get in and figure stuff out, but I'm not a programmer. I will see what I can figure out, but for me ScummVM is an all new playground.
[18:45] <pecosdave> I've got another angle, I've found a program that will switch the screen to 640x480 256 then load the game (compatability mode isn't working for some reason) I'll see if I can get the original engine to run it with that chain loader.
[18:47] <_sev_> pecosdave: could you please provide me with the file list?
[18:47] <_sev_> perhaps what happens is that it has the demo in a subfolders, and it comes into the way
[18:59] <pecosdave> Sure, give me a moment, was messing with quickres (a no-go BTW - wanted WIN95 drivers)
