[09:33] <Raziel^> i have a question, please
[09:33] <Raziel^> my fork is still 6 commits ahead although the pr done with it has been merged
[09:34] <Raziel^> how do i get it on par again so i can create a new pr?
[09:34] <Trixar_za> Phantasmagoria?
[09:34] <Raziel^> thats with the github website
[09:35] <fuzzie> Raziel^: how are you making the PRs?
[09:35] <Trixar_za> Sorry, I'm reading LeChuck's bug things
[09:36] <Raziel^> fuzzie: i only did one...i fork, change the files and create the report
[09:36] <fuzzie> Raziel^: but you did it all on the website?
[09:36] <Trixar_za> Good game to try: Return to Mysterious Island. Multiple solutions and item crafting - awesome (ignore the lamers that calls this 'what's wrong with Adventure games')
[09:36] <Raziel^> yes
[09:36] <fuzzie> you have to delete your fork and refork I think
[09:37] <Raziel^> hmm, ok
[09:37] Action: Raziel^ hopes he doesn't break anything

[09:43] <Raziel^> i test everything i change locally...but i cannot upload it, mercurial in it's version i have doesn't support such magic
[09:43] <fuzzie> yes, I'm just warning you this probably isn't a friendly UI
[09:43] <fuzzie> you could use the svn gateway I guess?

[09:52] <Raziel^> fuzzie: have you had success with the Tony bug? :-P
[09:54] <Raziel^> i'll just add it to the pr then :-)
[10:03] <Raziel^> how does scummvm store it's version information?
[10:03] <Raziel^> are there variables i can read out?
[10:13] <Raziel^> i mean the one that can be checked with "scummvm --version"

[11:23] <DrMcCoy> Hmm, that Inherit the Earth kickstarter campaign doesn't look like it's going to make it
[11:33] <Raziel^> yes, too bad
[11:33] <Raziel^> will be the second time they don't succeed
[11:38] <fuzzie> $160k is a pretty high goal
[11:39] <DrMcCoy> And the original game never managed to get that much of a cult following to get millions on nostalgia alone
[11:39] <Raziel^> which i think is sad, the original was classic
[11:51] <fuzzie> I think that high a goal without a better prototype is just unrealistic. look at e.g. the Book of Unwritten Tales 2 kickstarter, raised $170k (with a $65k goal), lots of beautiful-looking scenes from a prototype
[11:52] <fuzzie> while the ItE one has almost nothing to offer to people other than nostalgia, which as DrMcCoy said is not enough
[11:52] <Raziel^> true...
[11:53] <fuzzie> it's frustrating to game devs because they want to fund their salaries/costs during preliminary development
[11:53] <Raziel^> maybe they'll work on it away even if they don't met the goal?
[11:53] <fuzzie> but that's just unrealistic to expect
[11:54] <DrMcCoy> :/
[11:56] --> Sslaxx joined #scummvm.
[11:57] <Sslaxx> Hmmm, Gabriel Knight.
[11:57] <fuzzie> I mean, without sufficient cult following. obviously the kickstarter most-funded video games is full of ridiculous amounts raised on that basis. :P
[11:58] <DrMcCoy> I personally put way too much into Torment: Tides of Numenera *cough*
[11:58] <fuzzie> yes it is conspiciously right there at the top
[11:58] <Sslaxx> Anyone into Bolt Riley?
[12:01] <fuzzie> the latest Bolt Riley campaign is an example of how to do it better I suppose
[12:01] <Sslaxx> Looks more interesting.
[12:01] <Sslaxx> Wish I had the cash to back it, but ah well.
[12:01] <Sslaxx> Anything suspect GK20th as Sierra's Gamescom reveal?
[12:02] <DrMcCoy> I'm really unsure about Bolt Riley. I mean is a Reggae game written by a group of mostly white dudes a good idea?
[12:05] <Sslaxx> Eh. It's worth a shot.

[12:05] #scummvm: mode change '+o droid2727' by ChanServ!ChanServ@services.
[12:07] <DrMcCoy> I'm not sure I like the Gabriel Knight remake either. No Linux support, changed voice actors (seriously, no Tim Curry, no Michael Dorn, no Mark Hamill? Bah)
[12:07] <DrMcCoy> Doesn't help that the voice actors for the narrator and Wolfgang are already dead, either :(
[12:07] <Sslaxx> Linux has always been a sore point with Phoenix.
[12:08] <Sslaxx> But the Phoenix guys knew (as did the Williams) about Activision's plans for Sierra's revival before it was announced.
[12:08] <droid2727> ugh, gk1 remake
[12:08] <DrMcCoy> droid2727: I was waiting for that :P
[12:09] <Sslaxx> Likely to be the first title released under the revived Sierra label, droid2727.
[12:09] <droid2727> Sslaxx: Your point?
[12:09] <Sslaxx> Was just that.
[12:09] <fuzzie> "we're all doomed"
[12:09] <DrMcCoy> Well, that's hardly news
[12:10] <fuzzie> not doing Linux support for a Unity game relying on nostalgia is surely just weird at this point
[12:10] <Sslaxx> Eh.
[12:11] <Sslaxx> They've been using the "we need to upgrade our Unity licenses" as a fig-leaf for at least the last couple of years.
[12:11] <fuzzie> it's pretty minimal effort for a considerably expanded market
[12:11] <Sslaxx> It still only accounts for 1% of all Steam users, Fuzzie.
[12:11] <DrMcCoy> Yeah, they did that with Moebius too
[12:11] <fuzzie> yess
[12:11] <DrMcCoy> And that...Erica Reed was it?
[12:11] <fuzzie> so for random retail games it's far less surprising :)
[12:11] <Sslaxx> Cognition.
[12:12] <fuzzie> (also lol steam)
[12:12] <DrMcCoy> Yes, that
[12:12] <Sslaxx> Frankly I hope that Linux Steam share grows.
[12:12] <fuzzie> but it does totally depend on the userbase you're trying to reach
[12:12] <Sslaxx> Being part of that 1% makes you awfully unimportant.
[12:13] <Sslaxx> And attitudes towards Linux are still more commonly like Phoenix Online's, unfortunately.
[12:13] <fuzzie> if you're not crowd-funding and you're not leaning heavily on an indie/nostalgia angle then I don't imagine it's worthwhile for a lot of devs
[12:14] <Sslaxx> There are vanishingly few devs who will do it even if they don't consider it worthwhile. But they do exist.
[12:14] <fuzzie> yes, but then we can conclude they're weird.
[12:14] <Sslaxx> Maybe, but that weirdness works out for us Linux gamers.
[12:14] <fuzzie> but aside from that isn't Steam inevitably going to be hugely weighted towards Windows users?
[12:15] <DrMcCoy> There was one dev who said the cost of the Linux port and the additional money coming from that evens about out
[12:15] <fuzzie> 3.39% Mac and 1.11% Linux both sound like irrelevant markets if you're targetting only Steam
[12:15] <Sslaxx> They are, no doubt about it.
[12:15] <Sslaxx> But they are being targeted. I ain't complaining.
[12:16] <Sslaxx> And if that helps them to grow and become more relevant sales platforms, good.
[12:17] <fuzzie> I guess I don't care :)
[12:18] <Sslaxx> And it's nice that we have engines like CryEngine, UE4 and Unity having (at least some) Linux support.
[12:19] <fuzzie> DrMcCoy: if your Unity port costs you that much then you are probably doing it wrong?
[12:19] <DrMcCoy> fuzzie: IIRC, that wasn't a Unity game
[12:19] <DrMcCoy> Sslaxx: Wasn't CryTek having money problems?
[12:19] <DrMcCoy> And sold off at least one game?
[12:19] <fuzzie> ah, well, actual ports are a more difficult balance :)
[12:20] <DrMcCoy> fuzzie: Still, using Unity doesn't automatically means it runs flawlessly on Linux
[12:20] <Sslaxx> Heh, DrMcCoy, I don't think CryTek will still be around in six months.

[12:21] <DrMcCoy> fuzzie: Among the Sleep was pretty broken on release
[12:21] <Sslaxx> DrMcCoy, Unity's Linux runtime has issues for sure. At least 4.5.x has fixed some of them.
[12:21] <DrMcCoy> Doesn't help that Unity doesn't let you develop on Linux
[12:21] <fuzzie> DrMcCoy: no, but the general dev story seems to be "it took us a couple of days of setting up the infrastructure, a few days of bugfixing, and a lot of shouting at upstream"
[12:21] <DrMcCoy> lol
[12:21] <fuzzie> and if you can't make two weeks of salary back from your Linux sales then I am sad for you :/
