[12:07] <happyfeet> I need some help with researching an old sierra game. Is this the right place to ask?
[12:07] <-- L0ngcat left irc: Remote host closed the connection
[12:08] <wjp> it could be
[12:10] <happyfeet> my parents did work at sierra online back when they were in coarsegold
[12:10] <happyfeet> And I'm trying to locate a few of the artists on facebook but not having any luck
[12:13] <_sev|work> happyfeet: oh, we have no original developers here
[12:13] <happyfeet> I figured as much, but I figured you guys must know a bit more about where they are now than me
[12:16] <happyfeet> wow, I fucked that up, the old office was in oakhurst
[12:16] <happyfeet> Ive been out of california for too long :(
[12:23] <happyfeet> I had a couple technical questions about the way 2d art was digitized for the old games
[12:29] <-- Harekiet left irc: Read error: Connection reset by peer
[12:34] <happyfeet> For instance, I remember at sierra they had artists making backgrounds on artboards. Yet everything I find about the topic has people making stuff in 320x200 in their painting application of choice.
[12:35] <-- user9 left irc: Quit: user9
[12:35] <happyfeet> they then used several scanners in the middle of the work floor to digitize it and then a lady at a terminal would hand off a floppy with the digital file to the digital artist where they would use corel software to work on the digital copy.
[12:36] --> Harekiet joined #scummvm.

[12:41] --> Peter_Staedtler_ joined #scummvm.
[12:42] <happyfeet> So my first question is. What happened to the rest of the original art pieces that were cropped from the game?
[12:42] <happyfeet> are they just lost forever?
[12:42] <happyfeet> for instance
[12:42] <happyfeet> http://imgur.com/a/Fla8C
[12:43] <happyfeet> I watched this get painted by hand with oil paints, but the original image was way taller than this
[12:44] <Peter_Staedtler_> where is this picture from?
[12:46] <wjp> Eco Quest
[12:46] <wjp> ?
[12:47] <happyfeet> correct
[12:47] <Peter_Staedtler_> Ah yes
[12:47] <Peter_Staedtler_> Very good game
[12:48] <happyfeet> I've now got my art degree and was interested in reviving the series. My dad had a lot of complaints about the game and wanted to see them make a sequel.
[12:48] <happyfeet> instead we got eco quest 2 which was the result or ranger rick being on the way out, and PBS having all the jungle themed stuff
[12:50] <wjp> hrm, Lori and Corey Cole may have written a bit about this recently in the context of hero-u and quest for glory art pieces
[12:50] <wjp> e.g., "Each piece is approximately 6" x 9", and is the actual painting that was scanned into either Quest for Glory 3 or Quest for Glory 4."
[12:51] <happyfeet> where are you getting this from?
[12:51] <Peter_Staedtler_> yes, indeed, that was the way
[12:51] <Peter_Staedtler_> actually not scanned
[12:51] <wjp> this particular sentence is from https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/transolargames/hero-u-rogue-to-redemption/posts/343353
[12:51] <Peter_Staedtler_> photographed
[12:52] <happyfeet> they actually had some rigs for photgraphing stuff with digital cameras in the 90s
[12:53] <happyfeet> http://imgur.com/a/cEfeY
[12:54] <Peter_Staedtler_> Excactly!
[12:55] <happyfeet> See, the way they did some of this was by forced perspective. The art boards were wood panels from the hardware store
[12:55] <wjp> I'm still really impressed with what they did with art
[12:55] <happyfeet> they actually had someone cut the wood panels from a lumber yard down to the 6x9 or custom sizes as needed for long sheets
[12:56] <wjp> hm, interesting
[12:56] <happyfeet> then the panels got a coat of white enamel before going into a vertical bin in the art department floor
[12:56] <happyfeet> and by bin I mean plastic tote
[12:56] <happyfeet> just a huge stack of them
[12:58] <happyfeet> here I found it
[12:58] <happyfeet> the material was masonite
[12:58] --> user9 joined #scummvm.
[12:59] <happyfeet> But in that second picture I linked, what a lot of artists did was make depth by painting a second sheet with extreme foreground on it and then using a router to cut the outline
[13:00] <wjp> hrm, can't immediately place that castle
[13:01] <happyfeet> mixed up mother goose
[13:01] <wjp> ah, that would explain
[13:01] <wjp> (never really played that)
[13:01] <happyfeet> but what they did was paint and cut out buildings then slide them into places they wanted them to create a deeper foreground
[13:02] <happyfeet> thats why they needed photography equipment, the alternative was to use acrylic slabs over fresh paint which was scary since it could easily peel
[13:02] <Peter_Staedtler_> are you talking about Sierra On-Line?
[13:02] <happyfeet> yes
[13:02] <Peter_Staedtler_> are you sure they used masonite?
[13:02] <happyfeet> Im trying to figure out how to create the art style without having low resolution
[13:05] <happyfeet> in some cases they used a gesso fixative to the rough side of masonite to hold different media to it
[13:05] <happyfeet> but that made for easy trimming
[13:06] <happyfeet> I know cells were used a lot
[13:07] <happyfeet> I was pretty young then, so a lot of it wasnt clear to me at the time
[13:07] <Peter_Staedtler_> it's normal :)
[13:07] <Peter_Staedtler_> same here
[13:08] <happyfeet> I know what was loved for panoramas was to use cells for the foreground to give strong depth
[13:09] <happyfeet> a lot of artists liked to do by hand what we take for granted in photoshop with masking
[13:11] <happyfeet> they would use oil paint on a cell to paint everything black then use acrylic and pastels on the layer. Then they would clear coat with acrylic paint the areas they wanted preserved and just drop the whole thing in a bucket of MEK with an aquarium air stone in it
[13:11] <happyfeet> the result was that the areas that didnt have acrylic protecting it would get dissolved to clear again
[13:12] <happyfeet> then they would gesso it to their art board and either be done or do another layer
[13:12] <-- _sev|work left irc: Quit: This computer has gone to sleep
[13:13] <happyfeet> it was great because if they just sanwiched it with an acrylic sheet instead of fixing it, they could save an element for later
[13:19] <happyfeet> are there any good examples of modern games using hand drawn art assets like old sierra games?
[13:19] <Peter_Staedtler_> nope
[13:21] <Peter_Staedtler_> but..you know...everything is subbjective

[14:36] <happyfeet> oh
[14:37] <happyfeet> well do you have examples of originals from the background art of the old games?
[14:38] <TMM> happyfeet, no, I was also wondering how they went from drawings to pixel art like that. The art looks to be way too crisp on pixel borders for scanning and loweing resolutions. But I was also wondering how they managed to make them at all
[14:38] <happyfeet> thats what I dont know about and was hoping you could tell me
[14:39] <happyfeet> I do know that once the painting was digitized someone went over it with tools in corel painter I believe
[14:40] <happyfeet> er corel draw
[14:41] <TMM> must've been quite a lot of work
[14:41] <TMM> doesn't look like something that can be easily automated
[14:43] <Harekiet> I thought they talked a bit about how they added the artwork in DOTT with the audio commentary in DOTT Remaster, I'd imagine Sierra doing similar stuff
