[22:23] <@joostp_> anyone have experience getting data off of early 90s DDS tapes?
[22:26] --> LyTchet joined #scummvm
[22:27] <@Strangerke> I could try with my tapes
[22:27] <@Strangerke> I have several dozens of those in my cellar, and half a dozen of drives,
[22:27] <@Strangerke> What issue do you have?
[22:29] <@joostp_> the issue is that I have a bunch of tapes with revolution backup data from the 90s, but no way to get the data off ;)
[22:29] <@joostp_> the labels seem to imply it has BASS and KQ6 Amiga stuff on it
[22:30] <@Strangerke> nice :)
[22:30] <@Strangerke> What's missing? A drive? I can send you one!
[22:31] <@joostp_> I have a drive (Sony SDT-9000), but IIRC it's SCSI only and the only compatible machine I have is an SGI Octane
[22:32] <@joostp_> I used to have a PCI SCSI card for it, but don't know where it is now.
[22:32] <@Kirben> Yes, finding the right hardware and software, and extracting on modern system can really be a problem.
[22:32] <@Strangerke> Yes, I think my drives are all SCSI2
[22:32] <@Kirben> Recently had to extract even older QIC-40/80 tapes.
[22:32] <@Strangerke> Kirben :)
[22:32] <@joostp_> I don't know if I can just dd the tape on IRIX and then read/mount/make-sense-of-it on linux or windows somehow
[22:33] <@Strangerke> It's worth a try for sure
[22:33] <@joostp_> obviously I don't want to mess with the tapes too much because they might easily break (if they're even still readable in the first place)
[22:34] <@joostp_> Kirben: did you succeed?
[22:36] <@Kirben> Yes, finally after trying several ways. The QIC-40/80 tapes were actually quite durable, but the cartridge belts needed replacing on several tapes.
[22:37] <@joostp_> what software did you use?
[22:37] <@Kirben> DDS looks more standard type of cassette, so hopefully no cartridge belts to deal with.
[22:37] <@Kirben> Colorado Backup through DOSBox, using a tape dirve connected via add-on parallel port card.

[22:38] <@Strangerke> The software will be a bit more complicated to determine... using DD first may help

[22:38] <@Kirben> Yes, really need to find the right software, there are so many backup programs, and tape software tends not to be very backwards compatbile.
[22:39] <@Kirben> Exactly what DDS tape type? sounds like you could be dealing with gigabytes of data.
[22:39] <@Strangerke> I'm not sure there are so many for DDS
[22:41] --> waltervn joined #scummvm
[22:43] <@joostp_> the tape reads: "data cartridge 4mm DDS 90m 2.0GB"
[22:43] <@Strangerke> that's DDS1

[22:52] <@Kirben> That tape drive has support, just a matter of finding the software used at the time. Hopefully it is DOS based, and not Windows.
[22:52] <@Strangerke> Windows based isn't so bad
[22:52] <@Strangerke> as long as you have a Win95 running on a machine, I mean
[22:53] <@Strangerke> The last versions of CPBackup were for Win95 but not for DOS, for instance
[22:53] <@Kirben> Only if you have a real old system for it, Windows 9x/ME won't even install on modern system.
[22:53] <@Strangerke> Right
[22:53] <@Strangerke> But we all love old hardware, don't we? :)
[22:53] <@joostp_> the dates on the tapes are 1994, so it will have been DOS (or Win3.1 based) software
[22:54] <@Strangerke> yep.
[22:55] <@Strangerke> Or OS2.... Brrrr
[22:55] <Lightkey> I was just about to say :-D
[22:55] --> P2E joined #scummvm
[22:56] <@Kirben> Also watch out for driver support when using add-on cards, many seems to lack any MS-DOS support now.
[22:57] <@Strangerke> I also noticed that less and less hardware is provided with MS-DOS support, it's a shame
[22:58] <@Kirben> I think the hardware side is becoming more of a problem, legacy remapping is no longer possible with some PCIe add-on cards for example.
